HAVE YOUR SAY - Trading (Allowable Hours) Amendment Bill
20 March 2017
HAVE YOUR SAY - RE: TRADING (ALLOWABLE HOURS) AMENDMENT BILL
On March 1, the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Minister for Racing and Minister for Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Grace Grace, introduced the Trading (Allowable Hours) Amendment Bill 2017 to the Queensland Parliament. The objective of the Bill is to amend trading hours and reduce restrictions on trading hours in Queensland – especially regional centres.
Cr Graeme Scheu said the trading hours issue was very sensitive and had the potential to divide a number of regional centres.
“We are strongly advocating all interested stakeholders to submit a submission directly – either way,” he said.
“On one hand, there are a number of businesses that claim it will cause extreme damage to their businesses if they were forced to operate on a Sunday, while on the other hand, a percentage of the public and especially travelling public see it as a modern day trend and accepted lifestyle.”
He said Council was “between a rock and a hard place” on whether to make a submission itself as this would require a “full on survey” to back up either side of the argument.
“The Finance and Administration Committee is seeking submissions and we strongly suggest that any person with a position – either way – should make a submission direct. It is imperative your voice is heard should you feel strongly,” he said.
Council has previously taken a neutral position for the reasons listed above and not objected. This call for submissions is slightly different in that this is a statewide decision and not just relative to our district.
Submissions close at 4pm on Friday, 24 March 2017.
To make a submission, email to firstname.lastname@example.org or mail to:
