Telstra to Close Public Payphones
Telstra have notified Goondiwindi Regional Council of its intent to remove a number of public payphones in the Council area.
Council's Mayor, Graeme Scheu, says while Council understands the financial implications in maintaining the phones there may be some residents that rely on the phones for general or emergency contacts.
"I have spoken with Telstra and they have agreed to extend the date for submissions on the matter until next Wednesday 30 September," Cr Scheu said.
"Council appreciates this extension and I would strongly encourage any resident who has concerns to write to Telstra on this matter," he said.
Texas residents have recently submitted a petition opposing the removal of the Greenup Street public phone in front of Ford's store.
"We are delighted that Telstra have considered the concerns of Texas residents and agreed to defer a review of the removal of that phone for another twelve months," Cr Scheu said.
The public payphones currently targeted for removal are located at:
-
181 Marshall Street, Goondiwindi in front of East End Traders
-
Marshall Street, Goondiwindi in front of the Town Swimming Pool
-
